Record breaking wind speeds during Éowyn
There were six named storms in the 2024/25 storm season which ran from Sunday 1 September 2024 to Sunday 31 August 2025 (inclusive) and produced some significant weather. The full 2024/25 storm name list was Ashley, Bert, Conall, Darragh, Éowyn, Floris, Gerben, Hugo, Izzy, James, Kayleigh, Lewis, Mavis, Naoise, Otje, Poppy, Rafi, Sayuri, Tilly, Vivienne and Wren.
Ireland's 2024/25 storm season will be remembered for the hurricane force winds, heavy rainfall in the west, and significant waves off the south coast. Ashley in October brought gusts of 137 km/h and a 19.7 m wave off Wexford. November's Bert observed 57 mm of rain in a single day at Knock Airport, while Conall passed quietly but delivered a sharp -4.8 °C frost. December's violent Darragh observed gusts up to 141 km/h and drove a 16 metre wave off Cork. It was January's hurricane force Éowyn that set wind speed records and gusts up to 184 km/h as atmospheric air pressure plunged to 940 hPa (one of the deepest lows ever recorded here) and waves up to 20.2 m wave off Cork. Floris in August, a summer gale observed 104 km/h gusts at Malin Head. Though less severe than the winter storms, Floris stood out as another example of the increasing tendency for named storms outside the traditional winter season.
