A long stormy season

There were 14 named storms during the 2023/24 storm season which runs from Friday 1 September 2023 to Saturday 31 August 2024 (inclusive). This season brought a succession of powerful systems from September in 2023 through to August 2024.

Agnes arrived at end of September 2023 and delivered strong gales across southern counties. Sherkin Island observed gusts of 117 km/h, Valentia recorded nearly 30 mm of rain, and seas off the Cork and Wexford coasts were just over 14 m. During October, Babet brought more than 55 mm rainfall at Cork Airport of in a single day.

A trio of named storms were observed in November. Ciarán had Atlantic waves up to 13.8 m and pressure dropped to 967 hPa. Days later, Elisa produced an 18.9 m wave west of Ireland, one of the highest observed of the season. Debi observed gusts up to 115 km/h inland at Athenry and brought heavy rain to Mayo. December brought four back-to-back systems. Elin and Fergus arrived on consecutive days, with Fergus producing 117 km/h gusts at Mace Head and 16 m seas off the south coast. By year's end, Storms Gerrit and Geraldine passed in rapid succession.

Violent storm Isha swept across the country, gusting to 137 km/h at Mace Head and generating 18 m Atlantic seas. Just two days later, storm force Jocelyn followed with the highest wave of the season, 19.2 m measured by Buoy M6 in the deep Atlantic. Quieter until Kathleen in April, produced 17 m seas and damaging winds along the west and north coasts. The season ended with Lilian in August and gale force winds for Ireland.
