A stormy, rain-soaked season
There were nine named storms during the 2018/19 storm season, which ran from Saturday 1 September 2018 to Saturday 31 August 2019 (inclusive). The season began violently in mid-September with Ali and gusts up to 146 km/h at Mace Head, along with 12 m waves off Cork. Just two days later, Bronagh brought more than 45 mm of rain in Wexford.
In October, Callum observed waves of 17.1 m off the Cork coast, one of the highest waves of the season, and gusts hit 124 km/h at Belmullet. Diana followed in late November with heavy rain in Galway and an 18 m wave, the largest of the season, recorded off Cork. Deirdre in December was less intense but still produced waves up to 14.5 m.
A bit of calm for the New Year before Erik in early February, which was the deepest of the season, dropping to 965 hPa at Malin Head and gusts of 120 km/h, along with over 56 mm of rain in Kerry. March saw Freya and Gareth with storm force winds. The season ended with Hannah in April which produced sustained storm force winds, gusts of 122 km/h and waves up to 13.5 m off the Cork coast.
