Ophelia and Emma dominate, with wind and snow

There were 11 named storms during the 2017/18 storm season, which ran from Friday 1 September 2017 to Friday 31 August 2018 (inclusive). This was a remarkable season, bringing tropical remnants, violent Atlantic storms, extreme waves, heavy rain, and Arctic cold all in one.

It began in September with Aileen, an early-season gale that observed 35.6 mm of rain in Sligo and waves up to 7 m off Wexford. A month later, came ex-hurricane Ophelia in October, Ireland's most powerful storm in decades. Sustained winds of 115 km/h were observed at Roches Point, gusts reached 156 km/h here, pressure dropped to 962 hPa, and Buoy M5 measured a waves of 17.8 m. Within days, Storm Brian followed with further gales and heavy rain in Kerry.

December brought Caroline and Dylan, with gale to storm force winds and waves topping 12 m during Dylan, and a stormy end to 2017. In January 2018, violent storm Eleanor on Tuesday 2 January 2018 produced gusts of 156 km/h and waves up to 20.2 m off the Cork coast. Fionn and David reinforced the pattern with sustained storm force winds and even bigger waves at Buoy M3 (off the Cork coast) with 20.6 m. Georgina capped the month off with more heavy rain.

Then came Emma in March, and the 'Beast from the East'. While Emma's winds were less intense than Ophelia or Eleanor, its combination with severe cold (-9.7 °C in County Laois) and heavy snow turned it into an extreme weather and climate event. In June, an unusual summer storm, Hector brought Galway some storm force winds and over 50 mm of rain in the Maam Valley.
