A depression off the northwest coast of Ireland generated a strong to near gale force or gale force southerly airflow over the country during the day. A trough approached the southwest coast of Ireland. The day had a cloudy and wet start with rain spreading northeastwards across the country. The rain cleared by early afternoon, followed by sunny spells. Later, cloud built again with further rain moving up from the south. The night remained cloudy with rain, especially over the south and east.
